Spirited Away

Spirited away is undeniable one of the most popular Japanese animated films across the globe. This movie has occupied my childhood significantly. Counting the character, the events, the settings, the architecture in the movie, were still, so vivid in my mind. There is so much playback values that keep bringing me back to this mysterious ghosty world. From today’s perspective, the background of the movies was so much connected to the story itself than I understood previously. It’s a story of a girl named Chihiro has to move to a new town with her family, but they accidentally went through a chamber that leads them to the spiritual world, where spirits and ghost reside. When they were wandering in an empty streets, her parents turned into pigs when they were eating the foods that suppose to feed the spirits. At the end of the day, Chihiro has no choice to work in a witch owned Yubaba’s Bathhouse to free her parents and her back to human world.

The settings and background of the movie was the biggest things that inspired me. The buildings and atmosphere was so surreal that makes me thought the architectures and streets were depicted from real world. The kind of surreality were

such as in between, natural or man-made, traditional or modern, Magnificent building but small spaces, has been portrayed so harmonies, that they even speaks when events happened. For instance, there’s a scene where Chihiro on a orientation by Rin, her caretaker. The acitivities happening around such as mopping floors, going in lifts, exiting lift, transfering towels, customers entering, customers exiting was so seamless that makes all these spaces so fun and exciting. There goes the fun part, but when Chihiro run through the buildings when she know she’s going to have a emotional breakdowns because she miss her parents, the buildings went instantly become dark and full of sorrow. Not only scenes could create exciting and sorrow emotions, when Chihiro trying to go down a stairs that has no support and handler, and you’ll fall into an endless hole. Chihiro took a breath and took her first steps and she just accidentally run down the steps. Just this part of the films, a girl trying to walk down an endless space with only steps without support and handling, it’s telling you that never afraid of going out for your first step.

Apart from the characteristic of spaces that were created in this movie. The spaces that belongs to individual was another interesting perspective. Let’s just talk about the twins witches - Yubaba and Zeniba. Yubaba is the evilest witches in the spiritual worlds who she wants to squeeze money out of the slaves and labours who they forget who they are; Zeniba is the kind witches who lived ordinary life in the wood. When Haku the dragon injured badly, Chihiro chose to escaped Yubaba and seek for cure to heal Haku. Yubaba’s office were so expansive and shiny with golden doors and jewellery everywhere, but at the same times, it resemble the ideas of distance and loneliness as well. On the other hand, Zeniba house, was so heartwarming and has a connection with us, as it’s decorated with those humble elements that you remember at your grandparents house. It’s that sort of experience with the settings and spaces that driven our emotion when watching movies, especially in this movie.

Another exciting elements about this movie for me, is the connection of the people and the mother nature. Growing up with gaming consoles and computers, this movie actually reminds me about how important it is to preserve nature. The biggest plot twist in the movie was *spoiler alert* when Haku remember that he is the river god in the river where Chihiro spent most of her childhood. It’s is that moment triggers everyone emotions reminding us, that specific place that we spent most of time and building memories. It’s how important to preserve nature, or in a more specific context, the natural environment around you. This film has given me biggest impact that when I moved out my old house. I could recall every tiny moment when I was watching this film when I was just simply 8 years old.

This movie is especially connected to me as it’s encourage me not to afraid of failure and dare to try what you imagine. Apart from that, it’s has so many moral values that influences my characteristic until today. It’s not only about asian values or just any good being but in a deeper sense, it’s encourage people to rethink the spiritual connection of us human and the mother nature. It’s also remind us to be more humane and considerate. No matter how, a movie that is able to capture our emotion and flew even higher throughout the plotline, it makes you thought you were once there inside the movie.
