Keep Moving Forward

ARCHITECTURE + FILM : MEET THE ROBINSONS

"Everyone on this planet has a dream, question is, how far would you go for a dream?"

“Meet the Robinsons” is a story about an orphaned young boy, Lewis in inventing a memory scanner, hoping to find his mother. In the process, he met this boy, Wilbur from the future wanting him to fix his time memory scanner and a weird evil Bowler Hat Guy with his evil hat-shape robot trying to rule the world.

The setting of this movie took place in an orphanage in the modern era. Lewis was left in front of the orphanage when he was just a baby. He was then brought up by a very kind and caring lady. Lewis is a prodigy in science and inventions. I guess this makes him growing up healthily and positively. However, no matter just how happy you can be, as an orphan, Lewis also felt unloved. He is so in love with his inventions that he always failed to find a couple that would adopt him.

Here’s the thing, in this movie, it is shown that couples of this modern time would just accept ordinary people. They don’t really accept kids or even things that are just…not common. The setting of this makes Lewis felt that no one would want him as he has failed to be adopted for 124 times and even his own mother doesn’t want him. Gladly he did not just become negative on life but he continue to be inspired and built a memory scanner.

In the future world that Lewis was brought to by Wilbur really amazed me. Thinking that people travel with bubbles and skyscrapers built in just few seconds, would this also be our future? And if it is, is there still a need for architects? This problem has been questioned frequently recently. When technologies had been so advanced, people can be creating their own building with maybe just few days or even just few hours.

The movie is also teaches people, especially parents to not tie down your children’s creativities and imaginations. Talents could be harvested if you could just spend time to acknowledge them. Sometimes, they will develop more than what you can imagine. Children always have the best imaginations, parents should guide them and encourage them instead of forcing them to do things and walk path that you think is best and normal to them. In the movie, the future Lewis and his family members grown up to be a great professor that contributed so much to the development of the future world. It was all because he met this very positive and kind couple that adopted him and thought him to remain curious to the unknown things and never give up.

Sometimes, you don’t need to be normal to be loved.

I also find this secondary character, Goob interesting . He used to be a baseball player until that day he lost his match in the competition due to lack of sleep. Goob was never enough of sleep due to Lewis always making noise at night doing his invention. But he didn’t really blame him. Till that day he lost his baseball match. He felt that his dream has ruined and became a very angry person even till he grew up. He locked himself away in his own world, imagining people around him hated him. He constantly heard about the bright success of Lewis time to time and finally decided to push all anger on Lewis. He then plots revenge with his Bowler Hat robot, Dorris on Lewis. He didn’t really want to hurt Lewis, all he want was to have some Lewis’s brightness to be his. It is sad to see him like this, holding grudge and anger and finally buried his own future. He used to be so kind, always help Lewis in his inventions. Sometimes, we have to move forward, just like what future Lewis’s slogan: Keep Moving Forward.

All small little things and interest should be appreciated and acknowledge. Wilbur’s family was all so interesting with their own inventions. Regardless of the functionality of it but they were all cherished by their family. Failures shouldn’t be ashamed of but to cherries either. “From failure you learn, from success? Not so much.” Is one of the sentences I like the most in the movie. Franny was told that frogs won’t sing when she was young. But she didn’t give up and her frogs sing in the future world. Same goes to all of us, if we could just be proud of our failures and it will build a stronger and better us. Things wouldn’t be easy from the beginning, we just have to keep trying and trying till we succeed and never be afraid.

The movie ends with Lewis finally understands that we shouldn't been disturbed by the past, instead we should just keep moving forward. He decided not to see his mother even he was just fews steps aways from meeting her with the help of the time machine.

Sometimes we will have obstacles, no one believes in you, but you just have to have some faith in yourself, believing youself and Keep Moving Forward.
