Many Small Cube
The 'Many Small Cube' is an installatio in Paris' Jardins des Tuileries created by Japanese architect, Sou Fujimoto. It composed of suspended metal cubes and plants.
Together they create a structure with seemingly random cantilevers and openings on a tree-lined avenue in the Tuileries park. The void in the centre of the installation represents the "living area", with formal entrances at either side and lots of other access points if "one doesn't mind lowering their head," said a statement from Fujimoto. The structure is intended to represent a "nomadic" house and serve partly as an architectural intervention and partly as a sculpture. Althought the whole structure is served as a sculpture or an art pieces, the architect sttill consider the space experience inside the structure.
For me, an installation which having the space consideration for people to go through and experience would make the gap between the public and art become closer, rather than just a sculpture with an amazing form.
The cube which was made of the aluminium will reflex the sunlight which will create a spiritual experience to the people who stay inside the installation. The sunlight penetrate through the floating volumes that comprise ‘many small cubes’ create ‘a new experience of space, a rhythm of flickering shadows and lights like the sun filtering through leafy trees. It create a poetic scenery that the people who is inside the installation will feel like under a big tree. The feeling of calm and peaceful annotate the whole installation.
Furthermore, the most thing that give me a great impact is the concept behind the installation which is to bring architecture close to the nature. Every single architecture need to rely on the nature. The nature absorb the load and the weight of the architecture and also the design and construction of architecture should consider the different conditions of the nature. The combination of the nature and architecture could be very fantastic and marvelous. Before the architecture was produced and designed, the study of the site contexts and conditions should be considered. However, the architecture nowsaday is much more concern and care about the form and asthetic of the envelope of the architecture. Become an iconic architecture become the main stream of the architecture around the world. The beauty of the site contexts had covered by the architecture which make the users do not appreciate much the impact of the nature. This mistake could be easily seen at everywhere.
The rise of the industrial revolution had let the steel become a main elements of the architecture. The durable of the steel allow the architecture become various kind of 'crazy' form and posibilities. However the steel structure create a kind of desolated feeling which is a big contrast with the nature.
This installation successfully point out the view of how the architecture could actually blend with the nature. The ' Genius Loci' study become very important in studying the architecture. The peacefulness of the combination of this installation and the nature become the most important part of this whole art pieces.
For me, sometime art is not just a way to express the thought and feeling of the artist. It could actully act as a great media to delivery the issues to public and let the people rethink about the current situation of the whole world.
