The Revenant (The Genre & Background Settings)
The Revenant is a story inspired by the experiences of frontiersman and fur trapper Hugh Glass in 1823 Montana and South Dakota. The time setting of the whole movie was set at 18th century, Hugh Glass who was a fur trapper and hunter was attacked by a fierced bear in a jungle after his team of hunters was assaulted by the aborigines. Hugh Glass was abandoned by his teammates so that they could get away from the attack of the native. The belief to seek to live on made him revive from the death and become the power to take revange.
The whole story was mainly focus on the adventure of the Hugh Glass. The story start from the Hugh Glass's daily lifestyle and works which was an ordinary fur trapper in Montana and South Dakota. However, they was attacked by the aborigines during when they were hunting in the jungle. And Hugh Glass was attacked by the bear when they were running away from the aborigines. Hugh Glass had lost everythings after various of disasters and his willing to survive made him alive to face all the challanges. The movie is base on a real story which happened in 1823 which America started seperate from the rule of the United Kingdom. The caucasian who live in America started to developed the America and set the war with the Indian who is the native in America. The movie did show a lot of the conflict between the Caucasian and the aborigines.
In the movie, the director Alejandro G. Iñárritu put a lot of effort in capturing the fantastic scene. The nature landscape and view totally bring out the real situation and feeling to the audiences. The director use the natural sunlight to record the whole film successfully create the incredible and real-life feeling. The way the director to bring out is successfully and suitable to present to the audience.
Futhermore, the movie showed the society of America in 18th century. The conflict between the caucasian and the native was shown obviosly in this movie. The struggle of the character's pesonality show the tininess of the people in challenging the nature. The willing to survive on facing the challenge which was given by the nature had become the most interesting part of the whole movie. The movie showed the power of nature which actually could easily affect the willing of people to survive in a bad situation. Sometimes people is very hard to control the situation and their own path, cause the power of nature is greater than what we thought.
Besides, the movie deliver a concept that the weaks are the prey of the strongs. This is a typical situation which we could see in our real life. For me, the only way to survive is to make yourself strong enough to face all the challenges and problems. When Hugh Glass successfully go through all the challenges, he forgive his teammates who abandoned him before. He forget about all the revenge, but forgive them after he went through all the problems. He finally realize what is the real thinf he seek for. Not the revenge but to live strongly when he is still breathing. This is a graet way to convey the message to the audience and is very suitable.
