Revenant (Cast Design and Individual Character)

To critically assess the Cast Design and their individual character. Was the cast designed well? Did all characters have a purpose? Were the individual characters well explored? Or lacked depth?

The Revenant is intense but refined survival movie that portrayed the conflicts between native red indians, white american and the late newcomers from europe. It's not only portray incredible well about about the conflicts between man when greed is driving the demon inside us, it's also depicts well how little we human are compare to the mother nature. Guess that's why there's so many scenes of huge beautiful but frightening landscape. Not only the scenes are powerful but the director too cite the human behaviour through the eyes of protagonist seeing natural events such as ants work together to climb and highlander cows abandon packs when wolves attack.

Hugh Glass

Huge Glass is a protagonist who were in the team of hunt for pelts at the beginning of the movies. The team was then attacked by the red indians who hire them to rob the pelt teams by the france newcomers. Glass is then survived the attack with another 9 survivors including the Captain Andrew henry and the antagonist John Fitzgerrald. Glass is a calm and intelligent man as he able to make decisions in critical situation, and the captain trusted him for that. They abandoned the ships as water road are far easier to be tracked and they walked into the woods.

I think glass is a very determine and charming characters, he saved his lover's son regardless his skin color. He's generous character makes a contrast with the others. Besides, his relationships with hawk is shallow but connected. Sadly hawks, in my opinions is lack of depth and unable to understand his emotions. Overall glass is still a very interesting characters, as surviving from bears attacks, multiple human conflicts, fall from cliff. Leonardo dicapro has portray well on how a man determind to survived after losing all he have and harsh conditions.

John fitzgerrald

Tom hardy has handle John fitzgerrald very well in my opinions. That evil, coldblood, ignorant is just too real and makes me hated him. He’s hold hatred upon Hawk who is native, at least visually. He’s character is well synced with the dramatic harsh arctic climate. In my opinions, it is very reasonable for one to develop such a cruel characters after living in this harsh conditions and seeing people dead or alive every single day. He is a very fine depiction of how a man would be when he has no more interest in packs and rely more on the barbarity of himself. I think John Fitzgerrald is more well developed character compare to Hugh Glass. John Fitzgerrald has always crave to live his own life in texas with an acre of land after he could return. Instead, we can’t see wha’t the reason Hugh Glass fight for apart from his loves one and his son. Hugh Glass has always lived in Hatred but John knows how we should pursue in our life, just that he did not care about other peoples and doing things without moral judgement. In fact, this is a movie more about survival, it doesn’t matter whether you have revenge, you will be the winner if you survived.

Hawk

In my opinions, hawk is a very much under developed character. He is the key person that we can understand the conflicts between the peoples, but instead, he died without even talking properly (all he did was just whispering with injured Glass). Apart from that, if Hugh Glass has met him when he’s still a child, it is very difficult to understand why he still acting like a children and even unable to adapted into the team. Further more, hawk’s village massacre flashback hasn’t tells anything about the massacre but only how hawk witness how his mother get killed. I think Hawk has the potential to be a better story teller or even be the narrative of the story. Sadly, his depictions was only like the puppets that follow the team.

Jim bridger

Jim bridger is a young brats that follows the team along. He’s kind, friendly but too weak to defy wrong doing. He share foods with the pawnee survivor, refuse to receive payment from the captain shows that in his heart, he wish that he still can be the justice one. I think he is good depiction of what we will be when we are too weak to resist rascal.
