The Construction Experience in The Architecture Education
Architect is a profesional who design a house, a building or even a big community. Their main job is to endow a concept design into a ordinary building or house, make it unique with it own value and quality.
However, before the architect appear in this society, mechanic was the one who built the architecture.
They own a lot of the technical skills and experiences in building the architecture. For example, a lot of the temple and imperial palace in ancient China was built by the mechanic and there is no architect at that period. Mechanic is a job which required high quality and value of crafting skills and jointing knowledge in architecture.
Architecture education nowadays are more focus on the creativity and design skills of the student. We are putting more attention on the 2d graphic presentation and 3D modeling software. Architecture student are doing the design and creation on the paper and computer without an actual experienced. Most of the student applies the construction technical drawing which is not suitable with their design had become one of the biggest problem in our education. I think in our architecture education, we probably lack of the knowledge and opportunity in experiencing the construction of the architecture. If we having more opportunities to involve in the construction site of a building project, we probably will have more knowledges and experiences in turning our imagination to reality. It is very important for us as an architecture student to practice our practical skills and abilities to built up a structure.
As an architecture student, we should not limit ourselves in just doing the design in front the computer. Instead of just using sketchup, photoshop or other softwares, we should let ourselves involve in construction site to learn more about the practical skills and techniques.
Futhermore, when we have the opportunities to involve in a construction of a building project, it will be very fun and interesrting in knowing each of the details elements of a building structure. Students will know more and clearly about the components of a structure, instead of just leant it from the notes. The experiences could be very useful and practical for our future in working. Besides, when we involve more in the construction, we will be more familiar with the tools which connect all the different materials to become a structure.
Moreover, materials is one of the most important elements in architecture. Diffeent materials might represent different feelings and with differents function. The knowledge in using the materials is very important when we design an architecture with it own special context surrounded it. When we are good in using the materials, the architecture that we designed may give a great impact to the community and even influence our society. When we involve in the construction site, we might have more opportunity to experience the materials and be more familiar with theirs characteristic.
In our lacal architecture education, we lack of the opportunities to let student familiar with the construction. And students nowadays are more tend to focus on the rendering graphic and 3d modeling which made them lost in focus on the core of the architecture. Students are tend to create a 'WOW' effects of an architecture, but not the actual function of the building.
If our architecture education could have more practical study programs, it might let the students pay more attention on the spirits and the soul of the architecture.
